International Women’s Day has long been a staple for advocating gender equality and celebrating women’s achievements. This year’s theme, "Accelerating Action," calls for faster, bolder steps toward gender equality.
At Daniel Owen, we support this message and practice it. With 50% of our leadership team being female, we have worked hard to build a culture where hard work, dedication and proactiveness define success – not gender.
Why are we choosing to focus on leadership?
Diverse leadership teams make collaborative decisions, drive stronger performance, and create a more inclusive work environment. Despite these benefits, there is still an underrepresentation in senior leadership.
Whilst women comprise a large proportion of the recruitment workforce, less than 5% of leaders are female in many recruitment firms. We are on a mission to change this statistic.
Every company, not just recruitment, can make the change, one promotion or one new hire at a time.
Moving on from the statistics, though. We wanted to highlight the people behind this important topic and hear about their daily challenges, triumphs, and the change they drive.
What have been some of the strong drivers for your career growth?
“Growth is built into the DO culture. From regular one-to-one coaching to structured career paths, I’ve always had the support I needed to progress” – Chloe Arnold
“The leadership team believed in me, even before I did. Their investment in my success gave me the confidence to push forward and progress.” – Ruby Cox
What inspired you to pursue a leadership role in recruitment?
“Seeing other strong women in leadership at Daniel Owen inspired me. I wanted to play a role in mentoring and developing the next generation of female recruiters, just as I had been supported.” – Sophie Rowley
What changes have you seen in gender diversity in recruitment over the years?
"We have top billers, directors, and decision-makers shaping the company’s future." – Suzanne Jellyman
"It’s incredible to see more women stepping into leadership, especially in sectors like construction recruitment, where men historically dominated. The shift is happening—and we’re leading the charge." – Sophie Rowley
What challenges have you faced in recruitment leadership, and how have you overcome them?
"Leadership comes with tough conversations and difficult decisions. I’ve learned that confidence, resilience, and the right support network make all the difference. Tackling issues with a clear head and taking a moment before acting helps me." – Becky Bagley
"Balancing leadership and parenthood is a challenge, but Daniel Owen’s culture of flexibility and support has helped me find that balance." – Becky Bagley
What’s one small change that can make a big difference for women in leadership?
Respect from our peers: I’ve often heard females in leadership positions comment on the challenges presented by females as opposed to males. I always find this surprising, not that I expect an easy ride from males or females but would think naturally other females would have more understanding of a fellow females’ trials and tribulations. – Hannah Smith
What advice would you give to aspiring female leaders in recruitment?
"Confidence is key. Women often second-guess themselves more than men. Trust your instincts and don’t be afraid to take up space in leadership." – Sophie Rowley
"If you don’t have female role models in your business, look outside of it. The support is there—you just have to reach out." – Becky Bagley
"Believe in yourself. You will make mistakes, but that doesn’t make you less deserving. With the support of those around you and the right intention, there’s nothing you can’t do. – Hannah Smith
What sets Daniel Owen apart when it comes to gender diversity?
“Successful female role models, top billers, and board representatives exist, and women now make up a great portion of the workforce. Additionally, there has been an increase in the number of female temp workers externally.” – Suzanne Jellyman
