Our very own Gemma Phillips and Elle Webber recently had the opportunity to join several other industry-relevant businesses to deliver a careers talk at Channing’s Wood Category C prison near Newton Abbott.
The day started with an insightful chat from Western Counties Roofing, with a talk from an ex-inmate who currently works for them. The pride from the former inmate as he spoke of his journey with Western Counties Roofing was nothing short of heartwarming. His narrative underscored the power of second chances and the invaluable role of supportive employers.
To cap it off, Western Counties Roofing surprised the ex-inmate with news of his acceptance into their apprenticeship program, a testament to their commitment to fostering growth and development within their workforce.
Following the talks, the day proceeded with an open floor to allow individuals to mingle with all the businesses at separate stalls, giving them an opportunity to network.
We talked to them about employability, their skills and how they can enter/return to work upon release. It was great to hear their different situations and learn about their skills; we ended up handing out details to a lot of people who were all very keen to get in touch with us in the future.
As always, it’s a pleasure to make an impact in the local community, and the day spent at Channing’s Wood Category C Prison was not just about corporate outreach; it was about human connection and the transformative power of opportunity. It exemplified how businesses can play a pivotal role in facilitating rehabilitation and reintegration by extending a hand of support and understanding.
A huge thank you to Channing Wood Prison for the opportunity to come along!
