More employers require workers to hold a valid CSCS card before stepping onto a site. With compliance, safety and proof of skills more important than ever, now is the time to secure your CSCS.
Whether you work in construction or are looking to start, understanding CSCS cards and the changes to them in 2025 is essential. In this post, we will explain what CSCS cards are, why they’re a thing, how to get one, and the important updates that came into play in February 2025.
What is a CSCS Card?
A CSCS card proves that a construction worker has the right training, qualifications, and safety awareness for their role. The CSCS card ensures everyone meets on-site standards and gets everything they need to know about health, safety and compliance.
Recent Changes to CSCS Labourer and Trainee Cards (February 2025 Update)
CSCS has recently made important changes to Labourer and Trainee cards, affecting thousands of construction workers across the UK.
Here’s what you need to know:
- The labourer card will be reduced from five years' validity to two years. If a worker continues labouring after these two years, they can renew their card for five years if they can provide proof of employment.
- The trainee card will be available to those with certain job-related qualifications, helping new workers start a training pathway toward a recognised qualification and a shiny upgraded CSCS card.
- The CITB Health and Safety Environment Test, which is required for card application, will now be valid for three years, meaning it can be used for the 2-year renewal.

So, why are CSCS cards important?
In addition to proving your skills and knowledge of construction, a CSCS card can present you with many opportunities in the industry.
- Construction is a high-risk industry. CSCS cards ensure that workers understand how to work safely, reducing accidents.
- Many employers require CSCS cards to meet legal health and safety regulations, helping companies avoid fines and penalties.
- Holding a CSCS card improves credibility and increases job opportunities. It shows potential employers that you're trained and competent.
How do I get a CSCS card?
The process of getting a CSCS card is straightforward but requires preparation. Here’s what you need to do:
- Pass the Health, Safety, and Environment (HS&E) Test
- Choose the Right Card – Different roles require different CSCS cards. For example, a labourer will need the Green Labourer Card, while a site manager may need the Black Manager Card. Some roles require extra qualifications.
- Once you've passed the test and have the right qualifications, apply for your CSCS card through the official CSCS website.
